Wickham
History
The Parish of Wickham in Titchfield Hundred was divided into two manors in the time of Edward the confessor, but in the doomsday book the land is listed as being held by Hugh De Porty. The overlord ship followed the rest of the De port barony in descent, passing in succession to the st John, Philbert and Paulet families.
Wickham is chiefly known as the birthplace of William ling, always known as William of wykeham, the founder of Winchester and new college, oxford, who was born in 1324.
The large square at Wickham possibly dates from the 13th century when Henry 111 granted Roger de Scures, lord of the manor, a market and fair.
