Swanmore

History

Swanmore was originally a tithing of the hundred of Bishops Waltham and was mentioned in a court roll in 1337. The modern civil parish of Swanmore was formed in 1894 from parts of Droxford and Bishops Waltham parishes and is situated on the edge of Waltham Chase.

The modern village of Swanmore comprises of mainly Victorian date, but there are older buildings in a hamlet to the north of the village. Brick making was an important industry in earlier times as the chalk of Waltham chase gave way to clay Solis in the valley of the Meon River.

Description

Swanmore is a thriving village situated near (2 miles) to both Waltham Chase and Bishops Waltham. Swanmore primary school is situated near the village church with shops including a post office, butchers, grocery store and even hairdressers nearby. Swanmore College of Technology is walking distance from the park and central high street. For entertainment the popular Hunters Inn is close by with the Bricklayers arms being within walking distance of the high street and car parks. Property vary from the turn of the century to now, with a good mixture of small estates with 2,3,4 and 5 bedroom property to more cottage type property.
